Six opportunities this week across science, environment, and tech. Have an opportunity? Share it here. If Mwendo helped you on your journey, let us know here!

1. AFS Global STEM Accelerators 2026

📚 Program · Science  ·  Deadline: April 15, 2026

If you are a young woman aged 15–17.5 who loves science or engineering and wants to spend a summer going deeper into it alongside peers from around the world.

A free or subsidised 12-week virtual program running June - August 2026, built around STEM, social impact, and global collaboration. You come out with a certificate from AFS and the University of Pennsylvania, a network of peers from multiple countries, and real experience applying science to problems that matter.

You'll need a reliable internet connection, a webcam, and a microphone - check these before applying.

2. Big Science Competition 2026

🏆 Competition · Science  ·  Deadline: April 28, 2026

For students up to Grade 10 who enjoy science and want to find out how their knowledge compares with students in 52 other countries.

A 50-minute online exam covering biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences - all framed around real-life scenarios, rather than just textbook recall. You get a certificate and a global benchmark of where you stand. The questions are designed to make you think, which makes it genuinely useful practice regardless of your result.

Registration must go through your school - the exam costs about KES 850 per student, so talk to your science teacher soon, since the school deadline is April 28.

3. USAII Global AI Hackathon 2026

🏆 Competition · Tech & Computing  ·  Deadline: June 30, 2026

For students who want to build meaningful AI solutions with real-world relevance, even with no prior experience.

You and up to four teammates design and build an AI solution for a real challenge - in education, health, sustainability, or social impact - then pitch it to judges. Mentorship and office hours are built into the programme, so you are not working alone. The prize pool is $15,000 USD, with $6,000 going to the top high school team.

Formal registration opens in April 2026 - pre-register now at the link so you do not miss it when it goes live.

4. International Psychology Olympiad (IPsyO)

🏆 Competition · Science  ·  Deadline: July 11, 2026

If you're curious about how people think, feel, and behave - or just want to explore psychology for the first time.

You'll engage with topics across cognitive, developmental, social, and clinical psychology through multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Top performers earn certificates and can be selected to represent their country at the international finals. The competition is completely free to enter.

You can self-study everything you need using free resources online - no prior psychology background required.

5. beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship

🤝 Fellowship  ·  Environment ·  Deadline: Rolling

For students who care about climate and sustainability and want to learn how to turn that interest into real action.

You'll go through a structured online learning curriculum on sustainability and climate, get mentorship from experts in the field, and build projects alongside peers from Kenya and across the world. The fellowship is fully free and open to Kenyan students aged 16 and above.

The application deadline has passed, but late applications can still be submitted until the commence date.

6. International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)

🏆 Competition · Science  ·  Deadline: April 02, 2026

If you are curious about biology, genetics, or how science can solve real problems in the world around you.

You and your team spend months designing and building an actual biological system using genetic parts, then travel to Paris in November to present your work alongside teams from around the world. You get access to iGEM's global parts registry and biological materials, so this is hands-on lab science. You also build relationships with researchers and students who are working on the same kinds of questions.

Your team needs a faculty advisor and access to a lab for experiments; talk to a science teacher now, because the registration deadline is April 2.

Sent every Friday. Know someone who should see this? Forward it along.
